Ask ten people to picture a green gemstone and nine of them will picture an emerald. That is a fair instinct — emerald has been the reference point for green for four thousand years. But green is the most crowded color in the gem world, and the species competing for it are not interchangeable. They differ in what causes the color, in how much light they hand back to your eye, in how they behave when a ring catches a door frame, and in what was done to them long before they reached a tray.

What Actually Makes a Gemstone Green
Green in gemstones comes down to three chromophores, and knowing which one you are looking at explains most of what follows.
Chromium and vanadium produce the cool, slightly bluish, saturated greens — emerald, tsavorite garnet, chrome tourmaline. These are the greens people describe as pure. Iron produces the warmer, yellower, more olive greens — peridot, most green tourmaline, green beryl. Neither is better; they are simply different colors doing different jobs. A chromium green reads jewel-like and cool against skin, an iron green reads earthy and warm.
There is one useful exception. Most gems are allochromatic: the coloring element is a trace impurity, and without it the stone would be colorless. Peridot is idiochromatic — iron is part of its chemical formula, not an accident of the ground it grew in. That is why you will never find a colorless peridot, and why peridot's color range is so narrow compared with, say, tourmaline. Emerald: The Benchmark, With Conditions
Emerald is the green chromium beryl, and at its best nothing else looks quite like it — a slightly bluish green with a soft, velvety glow that comes from its fine internal texture rather than in spite of it. Colombian material tends to run slightly warmer and purer green; Zambian material, carrying a little more iron, often reads slightly bluer and arrives noticeably cleaner. Both are legitimate. They are simply different looks.
Two things about emerald need saying plainly. First, inclusions are the norm, not the exception. The trade calls the internal landscape jardin — garden — and an emerald with no visible inclusions at all should raise your eyebrows rather than your bidding. Second, almost all emerald on the market is clarity-enhanced, traditionally with cedarwood oil and more recently with polymer resins that fill surface-reaching fissures and make them less visible. This is accepted practice, but the degree matters, and reputable labs grade it — typically as none, minor, moderate or significant. Ask, and expect a straight answer. Emerald's hardness of 7.5 to 8 sounds reassuring, but its toughness is poor precisely because of those fissures, which is why emerald wants a protective setting and a gentle life. Tsavorite: Emerald's Color Without Emerald's Temperament
Tsavorite is a chromium- and vanadium-colored grossular garnet, identified in East Africa in the late 1960s and named for Kenya's Tsavo region. For anyone who loves emerald green but not emerald's fragility, it is the obvious answer.
Tsavorite is singly refractive with a refractive index around 1.73 to 1.74 — considerably higher than emerald's 1.58 — so it returns light with a brightness emerald simply cannot match. It has no cleavage, it is typically found eye-clean, and it is one of the very few colored stones that is essentially never treated. What you see is what grew.
The catch is size. Tsavorite crystallizes in small pockets, and clean material above two carats becomes scarce very quickly — the rarity curve is far steeper than most buyers expect. Demantoid Garnet: The One That Fires
Demantoid is the andradite garnet, and it does something no other green stone does: it disperses light. Its dispersion of 0.057 exceeds diamond's 0.044, which means a well-cut demantoid throws rainbow flashes through a green body color — an effect nothing else in green can imitate.
Classic Russian material from the Urals often contains radiating fibers known as horsetail inclusions. Unusually, these raise value rather than lower it: they point to origin and are treated as a signature rather than a flaw. Namibian demantoid generally lacks them. At 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs scale demantoid is not an everyday ring stone without care, but as an earring or pendant it is spectacular.
Green and Teal Sapphire: The Durability Answer
If the piece is going to be worn every day for decades, corundum wins the argument. Green sapphire is a 9 on the Mohs scale, has no cleavage, and shrugs off the ordinary knocks that would slowly frost an emerald.
There is a subtlety here worth knowing. A great many green sapphires are not uniformly green at all — they are stones carrying blue and yellow color zoning that the eye blends into green when viewed face-up. Tilt one under a lamp and the components separate. When those zones stay visibly distinct rather than blending, the stone is called a parti or teal sapphire, and that character has become one of the most sought-after looks in colored-stone engagement rings. Green Tourmaline and Chrome Tourmaline
Tourmaline offers the widest green range of any species, from pale mint to deep forest. Ordinary green tourmaline (elbaite) is iron-colored and leans yellowish or olive. Chrome tourmaline, colored by chromium and vanadium and found principally in Tanzania, is a different proposition entirely — a rich, saturated green that sits comfortably beside fine tsavorite.
Tourmaline is strongly pleochroic: markedly darker along the length of the crystal than across it. A skilled cutter orients the table perpendicular to that direction to keep the face-up color open, which is why two tourmalines from the same rough can look so different. Peridot: Warm, Honest and Underrated
Peridot is gem-quality olivine, and because its color is idiochromatic it is always a yellowish green — there is no bluish peridot and there never will be. The finest material, historically from Pakistan's high-altitude deposits and from Myanmar, reaches a vivid, almost luminous green in the three to ten carat range.
Peridot has one delightful party trick: its birefringence of about 0.036 is high enough that you can often see facet edges doubled when you look through the crown with a loupe. It is a reliable identification clue and, once you have noticed it, hard to un-see. Practically, peridot is almost never treated, which is refreshing, but at 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs scale it abrades over time and dislikes acids and sudden temperature changes. The Quieter Greens Worth Knowing
- Chrome diopside — an intense Siberian green, but soft at 5.5 to 6 with two cleavage directions, and it darkens toward black above roughly two carats. Lovely small, poor in rings.
- Green zircon — high dispersion and a distinctive sleepy glow, usually the result of natural radiation in the crystal, and genuinely scarce.
- Jadeite — graded A, B and C in the trade: A is untreated, B has been bleached and polymer-impregnated, C has been dyed. The distinction is everything, and a lab report is not optional.
- Chrysoprase — a nickel-colored chalcedony with a soft apple green and a lovely even body.
- Alexandrite — green in daylight, red under incandescent light. A green gemstone only half the time, which is rather the point.
- Prasiolite — usually heat-treated amethyst. Frequently sold as green amethyst, which is a marketing name rather than a gemmological one.
How to Choose the Right Green
Start with how it will be worn
This question eliminates most candidates before color ever enters the conversation. A daily-wear ring points to green sapphire, or to tsavorite in a reasonably protective setting. Then buy by millimeter, not by carat
Green species vary widely in density, and that changes how large a stone looks for its weight. Emerald has a specific gravity around 2.72; tsavorite is roughly 3.6. A one-carat emerald spreads visibly wider face-up than a one-carat tsavorite. Then ask what was done to it
Treatment expectations differ enormously by species: near-universal for emerald, routine for green sapphire and much green tourmaline, common for demantoid, effectively absent for tsavorite and peridot. Which green gemstone is the most durable for everyday wear?
