One is a nine on the Mohs scale and will outlive you. One has a cleavage plane and a temper. One glows like it's plugged in and is far too soft for a ring you wear to the gym.

Why gemstones are blue in the first place
Blue in a gemstone is almost never a pigment. It's an effect of how a trace element sits inside a crystal lattice and which wavelengths of light it absorbs on the way through.
In sapphire, blue comes from an elegant piece of chemistry called intervalence charge transfer: an iron and a titanium atom sitting side by side swap an electron, and the energy that swap costs is drawn from the yellow-orange part of the spectrum. What survives the journey is blue. In aquamarine, ferrous iron (Fe2+) does the work, while ferric iron (Fe3+) pushes the color toward yellow-green. In the finest blue spinel it's cobalt. In Paraíba-type tourmaline it's copper. Same color to the eye, completely different mechanisms — which is exactly why these stones behave so differently once they're set.

The blue gemstones worth knowing
Sapphire — the benchmark
Every other blue stone is, fairly or not, measured against sapphire. It is corundum: Mohs 9, no cleavage, refractive index around 1.76, and a specific gravity near 4.00 that makes it feel dense in the hand. Nothing in the colored stone world combines color and toughness better.
The blues run from pale, slightly grayish cornflower through the velvety medium-dark blues most collectors chase, and out into the teals and parti-colored stones that have become a genuine movement in engagement rings. Sapphire is dichroic, so a blue sapphire shows violetish blue down one optic direction and a greener blue down the other — a cutter's decision about orientation is often the difference between a good stone and a great one. Tanzanite — violet-blue, and pleochroic to a fault
Tanzanite is the blue-violet variety of zoisite, found commercially in one small area of northern Tanzania and nowhere else on Earth. That geological accident is the whole story of its appeal.
It is strongly trichroic: rotate a rough crystal and you see blue down one axis, violet-purple down another, and a brownish yellow down the third. Heat treatment, which nearly every tanzanite on the market has had, largely removes that brownish axis and leaves the blue-violet the stone is famous for. The trade-off is durability — Mohs 6 to 7, one direction of perfect cleavage, and a real sensitivity to sudden temperature change. Aquamarine — cool, clean, and forgiving
Aquamarine is beryl — emerald's much better-behaved sibling. Mohs 7.5 to 8, typically very clean, and available in larger sizes than most blue stones without the price climbing vertically. The color is light: pale sky blue through to a distinctly greenish blue, and lovers of the species split into two camps over whether that green modifier is a flaw or the point. Heating to drive off the green is routine and stable.
Because aquamarine is so light in tone, cutting matters more than it does in a saturated stone. A shallow aquamarine windows badly — you look straight through the table to whatever is behind it, as in the pear above, where the center goes flat and the life sits out around the crown. Blue spinel — the one the trade quietly loves
Spinel spent centuries being mistaken for ruby and sapphire, and it has never entirely recovered its reputation with the public — which is precisely why it remains one of the best-value fine gemstones available. Mohs 8, no cleavage, and singly refractive, so it has a clean, glassy character with none of the doubling or pleochroism you see in sapphire or tanzanite.
Blue spinel splits into two groups. Iron-bearing material tends toward grayish or steely blue. Cobalt-bearing spinel — historically from Sri Lanka and Vietnam's Luc Yen — is an intense, electric blue and is genuinely rare, the kind of stone that turns up a few times a year rather than a few times a week. Copper-bearing tourmaline — blue-green with a glow
Cuprian, or Paraíba-type, tourmaline is elbaite colored by copper. It was first found in the Brazilian state of Paraíba in the late 1980s, and later in Nigeria and Mozambique. At its finest it has a quality of light no other blue-green stone quite matches — a saturated, almost lit-from-within glow.
It's worth being honest that the species covers an enormous range. The Mozambique oval above is a soft seafoam bluish green with visible internal veiling and a dark extinction zone across the lower crown — lovely, but a long way from the neon material the name conjures. Blue zircon — more fire than a diamond
Natural zircon has a dispersion of 0.039, close behind diamond's 0.044, and a birefringence high enough (about 0.059) that you can often see the back facet junctions doubled through the table with a loupe. That doubling is one of the most reliable identifications in the entire blue family.
Almost all blue zircon on the market is heat-treated brown zircon, largely from Cambodia, and the treatment is standard and accepted. At Mohs 6 to 7.5 it is reasonably hard but brittle, so facet edges abrade over years of wear — protective settings suit it. Apatite — the neon that isn't a ring stone
Madagascan blue-green apatite is sometimes marketed as Paraíba apatite, which is misleading — the color is real, the association is not. And the color genuinely is remarkable: the oval above carries vivid neon teal around its perimeter, though the center desaturates through a soft window, which is characteristic of the material.
The catch is hardness. Apatite is the definition of 5 on the Mohs scale — it is the reference mineral for that number — which puts it below the quartz dust in everyday household grit. It's a superb collector's stone and a beautiful pendant or occasional-wear earring, and it is not a stone for an engagement ring, whatever the color is doing.
Also worth knowing
Iolite (gem cordierite) is strongly trichroic — violet-blue one way, pale straw the next, near-colorless the third — so orientation is everything. Blue topaz is hard at Mohs 8 but has perfect basal cleavage, and virtually all of it is irradiated and heated from near-colorless material. Kyanite has the strange property of hardness that varies with direction, roughly 4.5 along the crystal's length and 6.5 to 7 across it. Lapis lazuli is a rock rather than a mineral — lazurite with calcite and flecks of pyrite. And benitoite, found in gem quality essentially only in San Benito County, California, has dispersion higher than diamond and is rare enough that most jewelers will never handle one.
How to tell blue gemstones apart
You can get surprisingly far with a 10× loupe and a bit of patience:
- Look for doubling. Focus through the table onto the back facet junctions. If they appear as clean double lines, you are almost certainly looking at zircon.
- Rock the stone. Tanzanite shifts visibly between blue and violet as you tilt it. Sapphire shifts more subtly, between violetish and greenish blue. Spinel doesn't shift at all — it is singly refractive.
- Weigh it in your hand. Sapphire and zircon are dense (specific gravity around 4.0 and 4.6 respectively). Aquamarine and tourmaline are noticeably light for their size.
- Read the tone. A very light, icy, extremely clean blue is far more likely aquamarine than sapphire. A saturated blue that carries obvious violet is more likely tanzanite.
- Check the luster. Sapphire's high refractive index gives its facets a hard, bright edge. Apatite and lapis look softer and waxier by comparison.
None of this replaces a laboratory. For anything of consequence, a report from a reputable lab confirming species, treatment and — where it matters — origin is what separates a purchase from a gamble.
Choosing a blue gemstone for a ring you'll actually wear
Durability is the question most buyers skip and most regret skipping. Hardness resists scratching; toughness resists chipping and breaking; and cleavage is a plane of structural weakness that no amount of hardness compensates for.
For a daily-wear engagement ring, sapphire is the clear first choice, with spinel a close and underrated second — both are hard, both lack cleavage. Aquamarine and tourmaline are workable in a thoughtfully protective setting for someone who is reasonably careful with their hands. The treatments to ask about
Nearly every blue gemstone category has an accepted treatment, and accepted is not the same as irrelevant — it should always be disclosed, because it affects both value and care.
Sapphire is commonly heated, and unheated stones of fine color carry a substantial premium. Tanzanite is almost universally heated. Aquamarine is routinely heated to remove green. Blue topaz is irradiated and heated. Blue zircon is heated. Spinel is usually the honest exception, typically reaching market untreated. How to describe the blue you actually want
The single most useful thing you can do before buying is get specific about the blue in your head. Is it a light, airy, slightly green-leaning blue, or a deep velvety blue that reads almost navy in low light? Does violet in the stone delight you or bother you? Do you want the color even across the face, or does zoning read as character?
