You do not need laboratory equipment to develop a reliable eye. You need a method and some repetition.
Look face-up first. A stone is bought and worn face-up, so that is how it should be judged. Set aside how it looks through the side until you have formed an impression of the crown view.
Name the hue, then hunt for the modifier. Say the primary color out loud, then ask what else is in there. Is that blue drifting toward green? Is the red pulling orange, or pulling purple?
Ask whether it is gray or brown, not whether it is pretty. This is the saturation question, and phrasing it negatively makes it far easier to answer. A stone that has nothing gray or brown in it is a highly saturated stone.
