Two sapphires can share the same hue, the same saturation and the same carat weight, and one will read as alive from across a room while the other sits flat and glassy in your palm. That difference is almost always the faceting.

Why Cut Quality Is the Most Overlooked of the Four Cs
In diamonds, cut is a graded property. The major laboratories measure proportions and issue a cut grade, so a shopper can lean on someone else's judgment. In colored stones, no major lab does this. A report will give you the shape and cutting style, oval mixed cut or octagonal step cut, and the measurements in millimeters. It will not tell you whether the stone performs in light.
There are two structural reasons for that gap, and both are worth understanding.
The first is economics. Fine rough is expensive, and cutters in most producing centers are paid on yield. Every degree of pavilion angle that improves light return also shaves weight off the finished stone. A cutter who preserves a bulging belly below the girdle keeps the carat weight, and the carat weight is what the next buyer down the chain pays for. Beauty is a cost.
The second is physics. There is no single set of ideal angles across the species, because every gem bends light differently. Refractive index sets the critical angle, the point past which light reflects back to the viewer instead of leaking out the bottom. Corundum sits around 1.76 to 1.77, so sapphires and rubies have a relatively forgiving window of workable pavilion angles. Quartz sits near 1.54, with a much larger critical angle and far less room for error, which is why poorly cut amethyst and citrine window so readily. Tourmaline, peridot, spinel and zircon each sit at their own point on that scale. Judging a stone means judging it against what its species is capable of, not against a diamond.
The Three Things Light Does Inside a Faceted Stone

Brilliance
Brilliance is light that enters through the crown, bounces off the pavilion facets and returns to your eye. In a well cut stone it is distributed across the whole face, not pooled in one corner. Rock the gem gently and the bright areas should travel and flicker rather than sitting still. A stone with even, mobile brilliance will hold its color under office light, restaurant light and daylight, which is where a gem actually spends its life.
Windowing
A window is a see-through patch, usually in the center, where the pavilion is too shallow. Light enters the crown, strikes the pavilion below the critical angle and passes straight out the back instead of reflecting. The classic test costs nothing: hold the stone face-up over a page of printed text. If you can read the words through the middle of the gem, you are looking at a window. That area is contributing no color and no life. It is, visually, a hole in the stone.
Extinction
Extinction is the opposite failure, the dark areas you see face-up. Some of it comes from an over-steep pavilion, some from your own head and shoulders blocking the light source, and some is simply the normal contrast pattern of a brilliant cut.
This is where buyers often overcorrect. A little extinction is not a defect. Contrast is what gives a stone legibility and scintillation, and a gem with zero dark facets tends to look washed out and lifeless. What you are watching for is blanket extinction, a stone that stays substantially dark no matter how you tilt it. Judge it as a rough percentage of the face, and judge it while moving the stone, taking the best orientation rather than the worst.

Depth, Bulge and the Weight-Retention Problem
Once you can spot windowing and extinction, look at the stone from the side. A great many colored gems carry weight where nobody can see it.
Deep pavilions, thick girdles and rounded, bulging bellies all hide carats below the girdle line. The stone weighs what the invoice says, but it does not look it. This is why millimeter dimensions matter more than carat weight when you are comparing stones, especially for anything destined for a ring. A 2 carat sapphire cut with a lean pavilion can face up noticeably larger than a 2.3 carat stone with a heavy belly.
Practical habit: always ask for millimeter measurements alongside the weight, and compare spread across candidates. It takes a moment and it consistently separates well cut goods from weight-retained goods.
While you are looking at the profile, check the girdle for even thickness, look for an off-center culet, and glance down at the outline for symmetry. Slight asymmetry is normal and expected in colored stones, which are cut to the rough rather than to a template. A visibly lopsided outline or a table that sits noticeably off-square is a different matter, and it will show once the stone is set.
How Shape Changes the Way Color Reads
Shape is not only a style decision. It changes what the stone does with its own color.
Step cuts such as the emerald cut, baguette and Asscher use long parallel facets that return light in broad, slow flashes rather than fine sparkle. They are honest cuts. They show body color faithfully and they show inclusions faithfully too, which is why they suit clean material with saturation to spare and why they are less forgiving in heavily included goods.
Brilliant cuts such as the round, oval, pear and cushion break light into many small returns. That scattering lifts the apparent tone, which is a genuine advantage in darker rough. A garnet or a deep blue sapphire that would read almost black in a step cut can be opened up considerably by brilliant faceting.
Elongated brilliant shapes bring one extra thing to watch for: the bow-tie, a dark band running across the waist of an oval, pear or marquise where the pavilion cannot return light to the eye. Nearly every elongated stone has some. A faint one is normal, a heavy black one is a cutting compromise, and no setting will hide it.

Pleochroism: The Cut Decision Made Before the First Facet
In many colored gems, the most consequential cutting decision happens before a single facet is polished, when the cutter chooses how to orient the rough.
Pleochroic stones show different colors along different crystallographic directions. Tanzanite is the textbook case: trichroic, showing blue, violet and a brownish or khaki tone depending on the viewing direction. The cutter must choose which color faces up. Orienting for the strongest blue usually means sacrificing weight, because the blue direction rarely aligns with the longest axis of the crystal. Orient for weight instead and the finished stone leans violet or muddy. Iolite, andalusite, kunzite and to a subtler degree ruby and sapphire all present versions of the same choice.
This is worth knowing because it explains a puzzle buyers run into constantly: why one tanzanite of a given weight commands so much more than another that looks similar on paper. Often you are not paying for the color the stone contains, you are paying for the weight the cutter gave up to put that color face-up.
A Practical Checklist for Judging Cut
None of this requires a loupe or a lab. Six habits will carry you a long way:
- Read through it. Hold the stone face-up over printed text. Legible words mean a window.
- Rock it. Move the gem under both a single point source and diffuse light. Brilliance should travel across the face, not stay parked.
- Estimate extinction as a percentage, in the stone's best orientation rather than its worst. Some contrast is desirable.
- Compare millimeters, not just carats. Spread tells you what you will actually see once it is set.
- Look at the profile. Watch for a bulging pavilion, a thick or wavy girdle, an off-center culet.
- Insist on video when buying remotely. A still photo can be lit to conceal both a window and a bow-tie. A short clip of the stone rotating under normal light cannot.
Where Cut Meets Value
Color still leads the market in colored stones, and it should. But cut is the multiplier applied to it, and it is priced far less efficiently than color or origin. That inefficiency is the opportunity. A well cut stone in a slightly less fashionable hue will frequently outperform a fashionable hue that has been cut for weight, both in how it wears and in how it holds interest over decades.
