Set two blue sapphires side by side and, in most cases, nothing your eye can catch will tell you which one has spent time in a furnace. That is the honest place to begin any conversation about heat treatment — and it is why the question comes up in nearly every sapphire purchase we help with.
Heating is the oldest and most widely accepted enhancement in the coloured stone trade. It is also one of the most misunderstood. Buyers often arrive believing that heated means fake and unheated means better, when the truth is more interesting: heat is a legitimate, permanent, fully disclosable process that has been used for centuries, and an unheated stone is not automatically the more beautiful one. What separates the two is rarity, and rarity is what you are paying for.
What Heat Treatment Actually Does Inside a Sapphire
Sapphire is corundum — crystalline aluminium oxide, and at 9 on the Mohs scale one of the hardest materials you can set in a ring. Pure corundum is colourless. Everything you love about a sapphire comes from trace elements caught in the lattice as the crystal grew, and from tiny inclusions suspended inside it. Heat treatment is simply a way of persuading those trace elements and inclusions to behave differently.
Clarity: dissolving the silk
Many rough sapphires contain fine needles of rutile — titanium dioxide — known in the trade as silk. In modest amounts silk gives a stone a soft, velvety glow. In quantity it makes the stone look sleepy, milky or grey. Held at high temperature, often somewhere between roughly 1,600°C and 1,800°C, that rutile silk dissolves back into the crystal and the stone reads as noticeably cleaner and brighter.
Colour: waking up the iron and titanium
Blue in sapphire comes from an interaction between iron and titanium sitting next to each other in the lattice. When the silk dissolves, the titanium it held is released into the structure where it can pair with iron — and blue appears where there was none. This is the classic transformation of Sri Lankan geuda, a whitish, unpromising rough that heat turns into fine blue sapphire. Lower temperatures, closer to 800°C to 1,000°C, are used for gentler work: clearing a yellow or brownish cast, or lightening a stone that is simply too dark to sparkle.
The process also runs in reverse. Cooled slowly and deliberately, a sapphire can be encouraged to precipitate silk again — which is how star sapphires and velvety-textured stones are coaxed into being.
Why the Great Majority of Sapphires Are Heated
The trade generally estimates that around nine in ten sapphires reaching the market have been heated. That figure is a working estimate rather than a measured statistic, but the direction is not in dispute: unheated is the exception.
The reason is straightforward economics of nature. Rough that emerges from the ground already possessing fine colour, good transparency and adequate size is genuinely uncommon. Heating rescues an enormous volume of material that would otherwise be unsellable, and it does so permanently — a heated sapphire will not fade, revert or need special handling in normal wear. Without it, fine blue sapphire would be far scarcer and far less accessible than it is. What Makes an Unheated Sapphire Rare — and Valuable
An unheated sapphire is one that came out of the earth already finished. Nothing has been added, dissolved or coaxed; the colour you see is the colour the crystal grew. Collectors prize this for the same reason they prize an unrestored painting: it is the original state, and originals are finite.
Because unheated stones cannot be manufactured out of ordinary rough, supply is capped by geology rather than by capacity. That scarcity is what drives the premium, and the premium is real — but it is a premium for rarity and provenance, not necessarily for beauty. A well-chosen heated sapphire can easily out-perform a mediocre unheated one on colour, cut and life. We would always rather sell you the better-looking stone than the better-sounding one.
One nuance worth knowing: teal and parti-coloured sapphires are frequently offered unheated, because heating tends to drive out the very green component that gives them their character. If the blue-green range appeals to you, you may find yourself in unheated territory without seeking it out.
Heat Is Not the Same as Diffusion or Filling
This is where careful buyers earn their money. Several very different processes get loosely bundled under the word treated, and they are not equivalent in value or in acceptability.
Lattice diffusion
In beryllium lattice diffusion, corundum is heated above roughly 1,800°C in the presence of a beryllium source. Beryllium migrates into the crystal and generates colour that was never native to it — oranges, yellows and pinkish-orange tones that can mimic padparadscha. Older titanium surface diffusion produces only a shallow blue skin that can be polished away. Neither is detectable by eye or by standard microscopy; identifying beryllium requires trace-element chemistry such as LA-ICP-MS or LIBS, which is one reason a report from a well-equipped laboratory matters.
Lead-glass filling
Heavily fractured, low-grade corundum can be impregnated with molten lead glass, which fills surface-reaching fissures and makes a poor stone look transparent. These are fragile — vulnerable to heat from a jeweller’s torch and to common household chemicals — and sit at the very bottom of the value ladder. The practice is far more common in ruby than in sapphire, but it exists in both.
Plain heat sits in a completely different category from these. It adds nothing to the stone; it only rearranges what was already there.
How to Read Treatment on a Sapphire Report
Because treatment cannot be judged by eye, an independent laboratory report is the only reliable answer. Reports from established labs state treatment plainly, usually under a heading such as Comments, Enhancement or Indication of Heating.
Language to look for:
- No indication of heating (sometimes abbreviated NTE, for no thermal enhancement) — the laboratory found no evidence of heat.
- Indications of heating — the stone has been heated. This is normal and expected.
- Heated with residue — heating was carried out with a flux such as borax, leaving glassy residue in fissures. A meaningful step beyond plain heat.
- Diffusion or a named element such as beryllium — a distinct and much lower-value treatment.
Gemmologists reach these conclusions with a combination of microscopy and spectroscopy. Under magnification, heat leaves fingerprints: melted or snowman-shaped rutile, discoid tension fractures haloing crystal inclusions, and altered zircon inclusions. FTIR and UV-Vis-NIR spectroscopy confirm what the microscope suggests. If a seller cannot tell you the treatment status of a stone, treat that as information in itself.
Heat Treatment Beyond Sapphire
Sapphire is not alone. Understanding how routine heating is across the coloured stone world puts the sapphire debate in proportion.

Ruby is sapphire’s sibling — the same corundum species, coloured red by chromium — and responds to heat in much the same way, with silk dissolving and colour clarifying. So Which Should You Buy?
Ask what the stone is for.
If you are buying to wear — an engagement ring, a piece you will love for decades — judge the stone in front of you. Colour, cut, transparency and how it behaves in ordinary light matter more than a line on a certificate. A beautifully cut heated sapphire will give you more pleasure than a dull unheated one, and it will let you put more of your budget into size or quality.
If you are buying with an eye to rarity, collection or long-term holding, unheated with a credible laboratory report is the traditional route, and the report is not optional. In that context you are buying documented scarcity, and undocumented scarcity is worth very little.

A Note on Caring for an Unheated Sapphire
Here is a practical detail that surprises people. A heated sapphire has already been through temperatures far beyond anything a bench jeweller can produce, so it is essentially immune to the torch during setting or repair. An unheated sapphire has not — and careless heat at the bench can, in principle, alter it and erase the very characteristic you paid for. Always tell your jeweller that a stone is unheated before any work is carried out, and ask that it be removed from the mounting for repairs involving flame.
