Ask most people to picture a one-carat gemstone and they will hold their fingers a certain distance apart. Ask a cutter the same question and the first thing you get back is another question: a one-carat what?
It is one of the most useful things to understand before buying a colored stone, and one of the least intuitive. Carat is a unit of weight. Size is a measurement in millimeters. The two are related, but they are not the same thing, and in colored gems they pull surprisingly far apart. Two stones that weigh exactly the same can differ by well over a millimeter across the top, which is the difference between a ring that looks generous and one that looks modest.

Carat is a unit of mass, not a measure of size
The metric carat is exactly 200 milligrams, one fifth of a gram. That figure was fixed by international agreement in 1907, ending centuries of regional variation in which a carat could mean anything from roughly 188 to 213 milligrams depending on which market you happened to be standing in. The carat divides into 100 points, so a stone described as 75 points weighs 0.75 ct.
What the carat does not tell you is how much of that weight you will ever see. A gemstone is a three-dimensional object, and only its face-up outline is visible once it is set. Everything below the girdle adds to the reading on the scale and nothing to the size on the finger.
Why two one-carat gems are not the same size
Density does most of the work
Every gem species has its own specific gravity, a measure of how much mass it packs into a given volume. Corundum, the mineral behind both sapphire and ruby, sits at about 4.00. Beryl, the family that gives us emerald and aquamarine, is far lighter at about 2.72. Same volume, very different weight.
Run that in reverse and the consequence is immediate. To reach one carat, a denser stone needs less volume, so it comes out physically smaller. Hold the proportions constant and a one-carat round emerald measures roughly 6.8 mm across, while a one-carat round sapphire measures roughly 6.0 mm. That is close to thirty percent more face-up area for the emerald, at identical weight.
The table below gives approximate diameters for a 1.00 ct round brilliant at proportions typical of colored stones, around 65 percent total depth. Treat them as a guide rather than a specification, since real stones carry thicker girdles and bulged pavilions that push the weight up.

The spread from top to bottom of that list is striking. A one-carat zircon and a one-carat amethyst are the same weight and the same shape, and the amethyst covers roughly 45 percent more of your finger. Zircon is the extreme case in both directions, since high zircon reaches about 4.70 while metamict low zircon can fall to around 3.90, which is one more reason to ask for measurements rather than assume them.
Depth, girdle and the weight you cannot see

Colored stones are routinely cut deeper than diamonds, and for good reasons. A deeper pavilion lengthens the path light travels through the stone, which saturates color in lighter material. Cutting to the shape of the rough also preserves weight, and rough is expensive. The result is that a great deal of a colored stone's carat weight can sit below the girdle, invisible once the stone is set. A thick girdle does the same thing in miniature: weight around the edge, hidden by the setting.
None of that is automatically a fault. A stone cut deep to hold its color may well be the better stone. But it does mean the number on the certificate is a poor proxy for presence on the hand.
Spread has a limit, and the limit is a window
The opposite temptation is to cut shallow and buy spread cheaply. Take the pavilion angle too far below the critical angle and light stops reflecting back to the eye and starts passing straight through, leaving a pale, glassy patch in the middle of the stone. Cutters call it a window, and it is the clearest sign that face-up size was bought at the expense of everything else.
The two pears above are the same shape and the same color family. The first is shallower and shows a washed-out center where the color drains away. The second is cut to full depth and returns light as bright flashes right across its face. On paper they may sit close together in weight. On a hand they are not close at all. Shape changes the footprint
Outline matters too. At equal weight, elongated and pointed shapes generally cover more area than compact ones, because a stone that tapers to a point carries less material at the tips. Marquise cuts are traditionally the spreadiest of the standard shapes, with pears close behind, while cushions and step cuts such as the emerald cut tend to carry more weight for their footprint.
There is a perceptual effect layered on top of the arithmetic. An elongated outline draws the eye along the finger and reads larger than a compact stone of the same area, which is part of why elongated shapes have always been a sensible way to get presence out of a modest weight. Estimating weight when a stone is already set
Once a stone is mounted you cannot put it on a scale, so gemologists estimate weight from measurements using shape-specific formulas. For a round brilliant it is diameter squared, multiplied by depth, by specific gravity, by 0.0018. For an oval it is length by width by depth by specific gravity by 0.0020. For an emerald cut the factor is 0.0025. These produce an estimate rather than a weight, and they need correcting upward for a thick girdle or a bulging pavilion, which is why any appraisal of a mounted stone should say approximately.
How to buy a colored stone by millimeter
Once you accept that carat is a weight, the practical advice follows naturally: buy by millimeter.
Ask for all three dimensions
For a fancy shape, ask for length by width by depth. For a round, ask for diameter by depth. Length and width tell you what the stone will look like. Depth tells you whether it will sit comfortably in a setting or perch too high, and whether there is room for the pavilion underneath.
Match the stone to the mounting, not the mounting to the carat
Semi-mounts and calibrated heads are specified in millimeters, never in carats. A head built for a 7 by 5 mm oval will take a 7 by 5 mm oval whether that stone weighs 0.70 ct or 1.05 ct. If you are working from an existing setting or a finished design, the millimeter figure is the only one that governs the outcome. Expect decimals, not round numbers
Calibrated commercial goods are cut to tight tolerances. One-of-a-kind stones are not. They are cut to get the best possible stone out of one particular piece of rough, so their measurements arrive as 7.12 by 5.04 by 3.88 mm rather than a tidy 7 by 5. That is a sign of individual cutting rather than sloppiness, but it does mean a stone can be a fraction too large for a calibrated head.
Watch the weight thresholds
Prices step up at round weights, particularly 1.00, 2.00, 3.00 and 5.00 carats, because that is where buyers search. A stone just under a threshold and one just over it can be visually indistinguishable while sitting in different brackets. If face-up size is what you care about, the weights just below the round numbers are consistently the best value on the market.
What this means when you are choosing a stone
Carat weight is worth knowing. It is the honest measure of how much gem material you own, it is what a laboratory report records, and within a single species it tracks rarity reasonably well. But it was never designed to describe how a stone looks.
So use it as one number among several. Ask what the stone measures. Ask how deep it is. Look at whether light comes back across the whole face or drains out of the middle. A well-cut 0.85 ct sapphire that spreads properly will out-perform a lumpy 1.10 ct every time, and it will usually cost less. It depends entirely on the species and the cut. At proportions typical of colored stones, a one-carat round brilliant lands somewhere between about 5.7 mm for a dense gem like zircon and about 6.85 mm for a light one like amethyst, with sapphire and ruby near 6.0 mm and emerald near 6.8 mm. Fancy shapes vary more again, because length, width and depth all move independently. The only reliable answer for a specific stone is its measured dimensions, which is why we list length by width by depth for every loose gem rather than relying on weight alone.
Why does my 1 carat sapphire look smaller than a 1 carat diamond?
Because corundum is denser than diamond. Sapphire has a specific gravity of about 4.00 against diamond's 3.52, so it needs less volume to reach the same weight and comes out physically smaller. Diamonds are also typically cut shallower, in the region of 59 to 63 percent total depth, while colored stones are often cut deeper to hold their color, which pushes more of the weight below the girdle where you cannot see it. A one-carat round diamond usually measures about 6.4 to 6.5 mm. A one-carat round sapphire is commonly nearer 6.0 mm.
Should I buy a gemstone by carat weight or by millimeter size?
By millimeter, in almost every case. Millimeters tell you what the stone will look like and whether it will fit a setting. Carats tell you what it weighs. Settings, semi-mounts and calibrated heads are all specified in millimeters, never in carats, so if you are working towards a finished piece the dimensions are the figures that actually govern the result. Ask for length, width and depth on a fancy shape, or diameter and depth on a round. Carat weight is still worth recording, but treat it as supporting information rather than the headline, especially for a bespoke commission.
What does it mean when a gemstone spreads well?
Spread describes how much face-up area a stone gives you for its weight. A stone that spreads well looks larger than its carat weight suggests, usually thanks to a lighter specific gravity, a well-judged pavilion, a thin girdle or an elongated outline. A stone that spreads poorly is carrying weight where you cannot see it, typically in a deep pavilion, a bulging belly or a heavy girdle. Spread is worth seeking out, but not at any cost: cutting too shallow to chase it produces a window, and a windowed stone simply looks bigger and worse.
Does a deeper cut make a gemstone look smaller?
Yes, at a given carat weight. Weight below the girdle contributes nothing to what you see once the stone is set, so two gems of the same weight will differ face-up if one is cut deeper. That said, depth is not a fault in itself. Colored stones are often cut deeper on purpose, because a longer light path saturates color in lighter material, and a stone cut too shallow for the sake of size will show a pale window through the middle. The question to ask is whether the depth is buying you color and brilliance or merely preserving weight from the rough.
Is a 0.95 carat stone noticeably smaller than a 1.00 carat stone?
Almost never to the eye. Five points is a difference of ten milligrams, and in a round stone it works out at roughly a tenth of a millimeter across the top, well below anything anyone can see on a hand. Prices, though, step up at round weights like 1.00, 2.00 and 5.00 carats, because that is where buyers search.
