Two rubies sit side by side on the tray. Same carat weight, same oval outline, same strong red, both heated. One came out of Mogok in Myanmar; the other from Montepuez in Mozambique. To most eyes they are siblings. To the trade, they are not the same stone at all.
That gap is gemstone origin — the one value factor you cannot see by looking. Color, cut, clarity and carat weight are all properties of the stone in front of you. Origin is a property of its history, and it can move price further than any of the four Cs. It is also the factor most often misunderstood, oversold, and occasionally worth ignoring altogether.
What origin actually means on a gem report
When a laboratory states a geographic origin, it is not reading a label. It is offering a professional opinion, formed by comparing the stone's internal features and trace-element chemistry against reference samples collected from known mines.
That word — opinion — matters. Species and variety are determinations: a stone either is corundum or it is not. Origin is an inference, and reports usually word it that way. Two respected labs can look at the same sapphire and reach different conclusions, particularly where deposits share geology. It is the softest claim on the page, and the most expensive. Why origin moves value at all
Geology writes the look
Deposits differ chemically, and that chemistry shows up in the stone. Classic Burmese ruby formed in marble, a rock poor in iron. Iron quenches fluorescence; without much of it, chromium is free to fluoresce red under ultraviolet light — including the UV in daylight. The result is that faint inner glow the trade calls pigeon's blood, a red that seems lit from behind rather than simply colored.
Basalt-related and amphibolite-hosted deposits tend to carry more iron, which damps that glow. So the origin premium is not pure snobbery. It is often shorthand for a set of optical behaviors that a particular geology reliably produces.
Rarity and the closed mine
Some origins command a premium simply because nothing more is coming. Kashmir sapphire is the extreme case: found high in the Zanskar range in the early 1880s after a landslide exposed the deposit, worked out within roughly a decade, never meaningfully replaced. Every Kashmir sapphire on the market today has already been above ground for well over a century. Supply is fixed, so the label carries scarcity value that no living mine can.
Provenance and romance
The rest is story, and story is not nothing. Collectors pay for lineage in wine, watches and art, and colored stones behave the same way. The premium is real even where the visual difference is marginal — which is exactly why it deserves scrutiny rather than reflex.
Ruby: Burma and Mozambique
Ruby is where origin premiums bite hardest. Mogok has been producing for centuries and remains the reference point for fine red. But the modern story is Montepuez in Mozambique, which came into production around 2009 and now supplies much of the world's fine ruby.
Early trade wisdom held that Mozambique material ran more iron and therefore less fluorescence. That holds on average — but the best Montepuez rubies are superb, and the market has priced them accordingly. The clearest evidence came in June 2023, when the 55.22-carat Estrela de Fura, cut from a Montepuez rough, sold at Sotheby's New York for 34.8 million dollars, the highest price ever paid at auction for a ruby. It displaced the 25.59-carat Burmese Sunrise Ruby, which had made 30.3 million dollars in Geneva in 2015.
The lesson is not that origin stopped mattering. It is that a superb stone from a newer source outruns a merely good stone from a famous one. Sapphire: Kashmir, Ceylon, Madagascar and East Africa
Sapphire has the longest origin hierarchy of any colored stone, and the most nuance inside it.
Kashmir sits at the top, prized for a velvety, slightly sleepy blue produced by fine light-scattering inclusions rather than by color alone. Burma sapphire is richer and more intense. Ceylon — Sri Lanka — has supplied the world for two thousand years and remains the benchmark for bright, lively blue, as well as for padparadscha.
Madagascar changed the arithmetic. Ilakaka opened in the late 1990s and produced sapphire so close to Ceylon material in appearance and chemistry that separating the two can be genuinely difficult. That difficulty is instructive: when a lab cannot confidently distinguish two origins, the premium attached to the older name is resting on something other than the stone.
East Africa is now the interesting frontier. Tanzanian and Nigerian deposits yield teal, green and gray-blue sapphires that the traditional hierarchy never contemplated — stones bought for their color rather than their passport.

Emerald: Colombia and Zambia
Emerald shows the cleanest geological split of the three big species. Colombian emerald formed in black shale sediments — an unusual setting that produces a slightly warmer, purer green and a distinctive calling card: three-phase inclusions, tiny cavities holding liquid, a gas bubble and a salt crystal together. Find those and the origin conversation is largely settled.
Zambian emerald from the Kafubu area formed in schist, with more iron in the system. The typical result is a slightly bluish green, often darker in tone and frequently cleaner than Colombian material of comparable size. Brazil, Afghanistan and Ethiopia round out the picture.
Colombian still carries the premium. Whether it should, for any given pair of stones, depends entirely on the two stones — a clean, vivid Zambian will outshine a tired Colombian every time. When origin is the whole identity
For a few gems, origin is not a modifier — it is the name.
Tanzanite comes from one place on earth: a few square kilometers of the Merelani Hills near Arusha, in northern Tanzania, discovered in 1967. There is no second source. That single-deposit status is the entire scarcity argument, and it is why the stone behaves unlike anything else in the market. Paraíba tourmaline works the opposite way and confuses buyers constantly. The copper-bearing elbaite that stunned the trade was found in Paraíba state, Brazil, in the late 1980s. Chemically similar material later appeared in Nigeria and Mozambique. Today the name Paraíba is generally accepted as a variety term describing copper-bearing tourmaline rather than a strict geographic claim — so a stone can be legitimately called Paraíba and not be Brazilian. How labs actually determine origin
Three lines of evidence, weighed together:
Inclusions. The microscope first. Inclusion suites are geological fingerprints — three-phase inclusions pointing to Colombia, particular rutile silk textures suggesting one corundum deposit over another.
Trace-element chemistry. Iron, gallium, magnesium, titanium, vanadium and chromium appear in ratios that cluster by deposit. Measured by laser ablation ICP-MS, these ratios are the most objective evidence available.
Spectroscopy. UV-visible and infrared spectra add confirmation, and can flag treatments that would otherwise muddy the reading.
Even combined, the answer is a probability, not a certainty. New deposits open and overlap the reference data. A confident origin call on a small commercial stone should be read with more caution than one on a major gem, because the economics of deep testing simply do not apply at every level.
When origin should drive your decision — and when it shouldn't
Origin earns its premium at the top of the market: fine, large, untreated stones where provenance is part of what a collector is buying, and where independent verification is worth commissioning.
Below that, it deserves far less weight than most buyers give it. A practical rule: buy the stone, not the story. Let origin break a tie between two stones you already love. Do not let it talk you into one you don't. Frequently Asked Questions
Does gemstone origin really affect the price?
Yes, and often dramatically — but unevenly. At the top of the market, a Kashmir or Burmese origin on a fine untreated stone can multiply value, because supply is fixed and collectors are buying provenance alongside beauty. Further down, the effect shrinks fast, and on small commercial stones it can be close to meaningless. The honest way to think about it: origin is a premium layered on top of quality, never a substitute for it. A mediocre stone from a celebrated mine is still a mediocre stone.
Is a Burmese ruby always better than a Mozambique ruby?
No. Burma's reputation rests on real geology — marble-hosted deposits low in iron, which lets chromium fluoresce and gives that inner glow. On average, Mozambique material carries more iron and less of that effect. But averages do not decide individual stones. The finest Mozambique rubies are exceptional, and the record proves it: the Estrela de Fura, cut from Mozambican rough, sold for 34.8 million dollars in 2023, surpassing the Burmese Sunrise Ruby. Judge the stone in front of you, then let origin refine the decision.
Can a lab tell exactly where a gemstone came from?
Not with certainty. Labs combine three lines of evidence: inclusion features seen under magnification, trace-element ratios measured by laser ablation, and spectroscopy. Together these place a stone within a probable deposit group — which is why reports word origin as an opinion rather than a fact. Some origins overlap enough that confident separation is impossible; Sri Lankan and Madagascan sapphires are a well-known example. Two reputable labs can disagree on the same stone. For significant purchases, that is a good reason to seek a second report.
Do I need an origin report when buying a colored gemstone?
For most purchases, no. What genuinely protects you is a report confirming species and treatment — whether a ruby is heated, whether an emerald is oiled — because those affect both value and care. Origin testing costs considerably more and matters mainly for fine, large or untreated stones where provenance carries a premium worth verifying. Why are Kashmir sapphires so expensive?
Two reasons, and only one of them is scarcity. The deposit high in the Zanskar range was discovered in the early 1880s, mined intensively for roughly a decade, and never meaningfully replaced — so the supply is finite and already above ground.
