December's three birthstones are all about blue. Tanzanite glows violet-blue, turquoise brings its ancient robin's-egg color, and zircon — the natural stone, not the synthetic look-alike — offers remarkable brilliance and fire.

  • Tanzanite — Modern · added in 2002; violet-to-sapphire blue, found only in Tanzania
  • Turquoise — Modern & Traditional · opaque robin's-egg blue, often matrixed
  • Zircon — Modern & Traditional · natural, high-brilliance; often blue

Modern = today's official list; Traditional = the older historical stone.
